What is a door knocker?

The door knocker, also known as a door hammer, is a hardware accessory fitted to a front door. It allows visitors to announce their presence by striking directly against the door or against a designated striking plate. Before the advent of doorbells and intercoms, the door knocker was one of the primary means used to signal a visitor's arrival.

Can a door knocker be fitted on any door?

The possibility of fitting a door knocker depends on the knocker model, the door material and its fixing system. Door knockers should therefore not be considered universally compatible with all doors.

Before installation, it is essential to check the door thickness, the nature of the substrate, the dimensions of the accessory and the type of fixing provided. Some models use through-fixing in particular. For a door made of aluminium, metal, PVC or with a particular construction, it is advisable to verify the feasibility of fixing before drilling.

On a door that has already been drilled or fitted with an old knocker, it is also advisable to compare the dimensions and fixing points to determine whether the existing holes can be reused or concealed.
