What is a door knocker?

The door knocker, also known as a door hammer, is a hardware accessory installed on a front door. It allows visitors to announce their presence by striking directly against the door or against a designated strike plate. Before the advent of doorbells and intercoms, the door knocker was one of the main means used to announce the arrival of a visitor.

Today, the door knocker retains this function whilst having become a true decorative element of the front door. A model in the shape of a ring, a lion's head, a hand or with more understated lines can completely change the character of a façade.

Brass, bronze or cast iron door knocker: which material to choose?

Can a door knocker be fitted to all doors?

Before installation, it is important to check the thickness of the door, the nature of the surface, the dimensions of the accessory and the type of fixing intended. Some models use through-fixing in particular. For an aluminium, metal, PVC door or one with a particular construction, it is advisable to check the feasibility of fixing before drilling.

On a door that has already been drilled or fitted with an old knocker, it is also advisable to compare the dimensions and fixing points in order to determine whether the existing holes can be reused or concealed.
