How to choose a cupboard handle?
Choosing a handle for a wardrobe door depends primarily on the type of furniture and how it is used. A small lightweight door does not require the same grip as a large storage door used on a daily basis.
Before choosing, it is advisable to check the following points:
- the type of door: hinged, double, sliding or folding;
- the dimensions and weight of the front panel;
- the desired number of fixing points;
- the centre distance of the old drillings in the case of replacement;
- the projection of the handle in front of the door;
- the space available for passing fingers through;
- the thickness of the door and the required screw length;
- any marks that the new handle will need to conceal.
There is no universal handle suited to all cupboards. A handle may be aesthetically suitable without being compatible with the drillings, the thickness or the operation of the door. The dimensions and specifications indicated on each product page must therefore be checked before drilling.
Cupboard knob or handle: which to choose?
The knob and the handle serve the same function, but they do not produce the same look and do not offer the same grip.
The single-fixing cupboard knob
The cupboard knob is generally fixed using a single screw passing through the door of the furniture. Compact and discreet, it is suited to small doors, tall units, wall-mounted cupboards, occasional furniture or narrow doors.
There are round, square, oval, cylindrical, sculpted and geometric knobs. Some models are particularly understated, while others become genuine decorative elements thanks to porcelain, bronze, brass, wood, crystal or natural stone.
To replace an old knob, the diameter or dimensions of its base must be checked. Ideally, the new model should cover the existing drilling and any marks present on the front panel.
The two-fixing pull handle
The cupboard pull handle is generally fixed at two points. It offers a wider grip than a knob and is particularly suited to large doors, low cupboards, sideboards, kitchen furniture and frequently used storage units.
Pull handles are available in different lengths and different centre distances. Some collections include several sizes, making it possible to use a short handle on a small door and a longer version on a large front panel while maintaining the same design.
The long handle for a tall wardrobe door
A long handle can accentuate the vertical lines of a tall wardrobe, a kitchen column or a storage unit. It also offers several grip zones, which can be practical when several people use the furniture.
The length of the handle must however remain proportionate to the door. Its centre distance, projection and the position of its fixing points must also be checked. A very long handle should not be chosen solely on the basis of its photograph: its actual dimensions must be compared with those of the front panel.
The T-bar handle
The T-bar handle often uses a single fixing point, like a knob, but offers a wider grip. It allows a graphic and contemporary result to be achieved without making two drillings.
It can be installed horizontally or vertically depending on its design, the orientation of the door and the desired effect. However, you should check that any rotation will not interfere with the opening or the alignment with the other handles.
The cup handle
The cup handle is particularly suited to antique furniture, sideboards, dressers, workshop-style furniture and character kitchens. Its shape allows fingers to slide under the curved section to open the door.
Cup handles can be made from bronze, brass, iron or patinated metal depending on the collection. As their base is often larger than that of a standard handle, it is important to check its dimensions and the position of the fixing points.
The leather pull
A leather cupboard handle can take the form of a loop, a tab or a pull combined with a metal fixing. It brings a softer touch and a warm look to a wooden wardrobe, a bedroom piece of furniture or a contemporary storage unit.
As leather is a natural material, slight variations in grain, shade or texture may appear between several pieces. Some pulls in our selection are handcrafted.
The edge handle or lip handle
The edge handle is fixed to the edge of the cupboard door. It is particularly popular in kitchens, bathrooms and contemporary storage units, as it remains visually discreet and preserves the lines of the front panel.
This type of handle requires a precise check of the door thickness, the position of the screws and the space between two front panels. On a double-door cupboard, two edge handles placed too close together may interfere with each other or prevent the furniture from closing correctly.
The recessed handle
The recessed handle is integrated directly into the door in order to reduce its projection. It can be a good option for a cupboard located in a narrow passageway or on a sliding front panel.
Its installation may however require routing, cutting or specific machining. A recessed model should therefore not be considered as directly interchangeable with a surface-mounted knob or handle.
Which handle to install on a hinged wardrobe door?
A hinged door can generally receive a knob, a pull handle, a T-bar handle or an edge handle, provided that the front panel allows drilling and that the fixing is suited to its thickness.
The handle must be placed on the side opposite the hinges in order to facilitate opening. On a large door, it is advisable to choose a position that is easily accessible and to maintain the same alignment across all the panels of the furniture.
Before drilling, also check that the handle will not strike a wall, a neighbouring piece of furniture, a worktop or another door when fully opened.
How to fit a double-door cupboard?
On a two-door cupboard, the handles are generally positioned symmetrically near the central junction. Their position must be measured from the same reference points in order to achieve a consistent alignment.
Before drilling, check:
- that both handles will be placed at the same height;
- that they will not touch each other when the doors are closed;
- that there will be enough space to pass your fingers through;
- that their projection will not interfere with the opening of one door in front of another;
- that the fixings will not encounter a reinforcement, a hinge or another internal element.
Two identical knobs give a classic and balanced result. Two vertical handles can give the furniture more presence, while edge handles preserve a more discreet aesthetic.
Which handle to choose for a sliding wardrobe?
Choosing a handle for a sliding wardrobe requires particular care. A handle with too much projection may hinder the crossing of the panels, strike another door or reduce the available opening.
Before choosing, the space between the front panels must be measured and their movement observed. Depending on the configuration, a low-projection handle, an edge handle or a recessed model may be considered.
This compatibility must however be verified on a case-by-case basis. Certain sliding doors in glass, mirror, aluminium or composite panel require a specific fixing and must not be drilled in the same way as a standard furniture door.
Can a handle be installed on a glass or mirrored cupboard?
A standard furniture handle should not automatically be installed on a glass front or a mirror. Compatibility depends on the type of glass, its thickness, its drilling, its framing and the fixing system provided by the furniture manufacturer.
Toughened glass, for example, must not be drilled after manufacture. If the door does not already have a suitable drilling, a specific solution may be required.
We are therefore unable to confirm the compatibility of a knob or handle with a glass front solely on the basis of its appearance. The furniture's specifications and the product's mounting system must be checked before any installation.
How to measure the centre distance of a cupboard handle?
The fixing centre distance corresponds to the distance between the centre of the two holes used to fix a handle. This measurement is essential when an old handle needs to be replaced without re-drilling the door.
The centre distance does not correspond to the total length of the handle. A model may extend well beyond each side of its fixing points.
To take the measurement correctly:
- remove the old handle if necessary;
- locate the two holes in the door;
- measure the distance between the centre of the first hole and the centre of the second;
- compare this measurement with the centre distance indicated on the product page;
- then check the total length and width of the new handle.
If the cupboard currently has a single hole, a knob or handle designed for a single fixing must be selected. A two-point handle will require the creation of a second drilling.
What dimensions should be checked before ordering?
An identical centre distance does not always guarantee an aesthetically satisfactory replacement. Several other dimensions must be compared:
- the total length of the handle;
- the width of its base, in order to cover the old drillings and marks;
- the projection, that is the distance between the door and the end of the handle;
- the grip space available behind the handle;
- the thickness of the cupboard door;
- the length of the screws required to pass through the front panel;
- the exact position of the fixings relative to the edges of the product.
A new handle may have the correct centre distance while still leaving a mark, an old hole or a difference in shade on the front panel if its base is smaller than that of the replaced model.
Material and finish: two different pieces of information
The material corresponds to the material used to manufacture the handle. The finish corresponds to the appearance or treatment applied to its surface.
A handle featuring a "stainless steel effect", "bronze", "gold" or "chrome" finish is therefore not necessarily made from stainless steel, bronze or solid brass. Depending on the product, it may be a finish applied to zamak, aluminium or another metal.

Brass, bronze, porcelain or wood: which material to choose?
Our collection of handles and cupboard knobs includes, depending on the reference, brass, bronze, porcelain, genuine wood, leather, pineapple leather, iron, steel, 304 stainless steel, aluminium, zamak, copper, concrete, crystal and natural stone.
Brass cupboard handles
Brass brings a warm tone that can suit both a contemporary piece of furniture and a more traditional renovation. It can be polished, brushed, satin, patinated, lacquered or unlacquered depending on the model.
Unlacquered brass naturally evolves with exposure to air and handling. It can gradually develop a patina, unlike a model with a protective finish. This evolution must be taken into account when several doors need to maintain a perfectly uniform appearance.
Bronze handles and knobs
Genuine bronze is particularly suited to character furniture, sideboards, dressers and cupboards inspired by antique hardware.
Bronze models can feature simple, geometric, sculpted or more organic shapes. Slight variations in shade or surface finish may contribute to the character of the material and its finish.
Porcelain cupboard knobs
Porcelain knobs allow you to add a colour, a pattern or a glossy or matt finish to a piece of furniture. They are particularly suited to bedroom wardrobes, kitchen cupboards, children's storage units and antique furniture.
Some pieces are made or decorated by hand. Small variations between individual knobs may therefore be related to the handcrafted manufacturing process.
Wood, leather and natural materials
Genuine wood brings a warm feel and pairs naturally with a wooden, white or coloured front panel. Leather allows flexible pulls to be created, while natural stone and crystal give the knob greater presence.
The wood grain, leather texture and stone veining may vary from one piece to another. For these materials, the appearance of each handle may therefore be slightly different.
Zamak, aluminium, steel and stainless steel
Zamak allows a wide variety of knobs and handles to be produced, with minimalist, geometric or decorative shapes. It can receive many finishes, including black, gold, chrome, coloured or stainless steel effect.
Aluminium is notably used for certain long handles and edge handles. Steel and stainless steel, for their part, offer a more understated or technical look depending on the model.

Which finish to choose for a cupboard handle?
The finish can be chosen to create a contrast with the door or, on the contrary, to blend in with the facade.
A black cupboard handle creates a striking contrast on white, beige or light wood furniture. A gold handle or brass handle adds more warmth, while chrome, nickel and stainless steel finishes integrate easily into a contemporary interior.
Porcelain, wood, concrete or natural stone knobs allow a more distinctive material or colour to be added to a plain front panel.
A similar name does not guarantee a strictly identical shade between two manufacturers or two materials. A black, gold, bronze or stainless steel effect can vary depending on the substrate and the finishing process. To fit several doors in a uniform way, it is preferable to select all the elements from the same collection and the same finish.
How to position handles on a cupboard?
The position must facilitate opening while respecting the proportions of the furniture. On a hinged door, the handle is installed on the side opposite the hinges. On two doors, the elements are generally placed symmetrically near the central junction.
To achieve a consistent result:
- define a common height for all handles;
- use the same reference points on each front panel;
- check the alignment before each drilling;
- use a jig when several doors need to be fitted;
- check the movement of the doors before tightening the handles definitively.
For an asymmetric, curved or decorative handle, its orientation must also be checked before drilling. Several identical handles must be oriented consistently across the entire piece of furniture.
How to replace an old cupboard handle?
Replacement is simpler when the new handle has the same number of fixings and the same centre distance as the old one.
After removal, it is advisable to clean the front panel and examine the old drillings. You should then check that the new handle:
- correctly reuses the existing holes;
- covers any marks left by the previous model;
- has screws suited to the thickness of the door;
- does not interfere with the hinges or internal fittings;
- remains accessible when the cupboard is open or closed.
The contents of the package and the length of the screws may vary depending on the reference. It should therefore not be assumed that every handle is supplied with hardware suited to all panel thicknesses. The exact contents must be checked on the product page.
If the fixing centre distance is different, new holes will need to be drilled. The old drillings may then remain visible if they are not covered by the base of the new handle.
Matching cupboard handles with the interior décor
The handle can echo other elements in the room, such as door handles, light fittings, furniture legs or taps. However, it is not essential for all the metals to be strictly identical: a consistency of style, shape or tone can be sufficient to create a balanced ensemble.
For a minimalist interior, edge handles, understated knobs or straight-lined models allow clean front panels to be maintained. In a classic or retro setting, brass, bronze, porcelain and cup handles add more character.
