Door hinges: the role of a component you never look at

The hinge bears the weight of the door with every opening. It is what determines the smoothness of movement, the consistency of the gaps, and the maintenance of alignment over time. An undersized or poorly adjusted hinge quickly makes itself known: a door that rubs, slams, or no longer closes flush with its frame.

Concealed hinge or surface-mounted hinge?

A surface-mounted hinge remains visible on the edge of the door once it is closed. A concealed hinge is recessed into both the door leaf and the frame: when the door is closed, nothing protrudes. This is the solution chosen for flush doors, which form a continuous plane with the partition wall.

Three-dimensional adjustment

A 3D hinge can be adjusted on three axes: in height, laterally, and in depth — the last adjustment controlling the pressure of the door leaf against its seal. On the model presented here, the ranges are ± 2.5 mm in height, ± 2 mm laterally, and ± 1 mm in depth, using the Allen key supplied. Any play that appears after a few months, or a slight sag, can therefore be corrected without removing the door.

Choosing the right hinge for your door

Three factors guide the choice: the weight and thickness of the door leaf, the type of frame, and the opening direction. As a reference, the 3D hinge presented here accepts a door of up to 60 kg with two hinges, a thickness of 38 to 55 mm, and maximum dimensions of 90 x 210 cm. Always use a minimum of two hinges per door.
