How to Clean a Polycarbonate Handle

Polycarbonate has the particularity of being a durable material prized for its remarkable impact resistance, 250 times greater than that of glass. However, it is not perfect and precautions must be taken when cleaning it. In this case, it is important to bear in mind that a few simple handling rules can be applied to prevent potential damage or attack on the polycarbonate.

The importance of cleaning polycarbonate

Once your polycarbonate handles are exposed to UV rays, they will age and see their outer layers damaged, mainly through oxidation. Over time, their protective layer will degrade, which tends to change their original colour towards yellow.

Furthermore, polycarbonate handles tend to accumulate dirt, or even oil, from repeated contact with hands. In addition, polycarbonate has the particularity of absorbing moisture, which binds dust and other dirt. This will make cleaning more difficult compared to other plastics.

Cleaning a polycarbonate handle

Good practices:

• Rinse the surface of your polycarbonate handles with warm water before actually starting the cleaning;
• It is suggested to use rather mild cleaners such as washing-up liquid;
• Besides cleaning the surface of your handles, you can disinfect it by using isopropyl alcohol;
• Take a soft cloth, preferably microfibre, or a non-abrasive sponge to gently clean the surface of the item without damaging it. Note that polycarbonate is a fairly soft material that scratches easily;
• Proceed to clean the surface of your handles by rubbing gently and evenly;
• Clean the surface of the polycarbonate handle immediately after the cleaner has been applied to save time;
• Rinse the surface with warm water whilst ensuring that all traces of the cleaning product are removed.
• Use a clean microfibre cloth to dry the item.
