Interior door handle on entrance door: possible, but not always advisable
We are often asked the question: "Can I install a handle intended for interior use on an external door?" The answer is nuanced. Technically, in many cases, mounting may be possible. But "it can be fitted" does not necessarily mean "it is suitable": an entrance door imposes stronger constraints (use, security, finish, type of lock).
Mounting compatibility vs actual use
Two things must be distinguished: mounting compatibility (can the handle physically be installed?) and suitability for use (is the handle designed to last on a heavy, heavily used and exposed door?). A handle intended for an interior door is generally designed for a more "gentle" use: lighter door, less aggressive handling, more stable environment.
Why an entrance door places greater demands on a handle
An entrance door is often heavier and used more frequently. It also undergoes more hazards: repeated friction (keys, rings, bags), impacts, humidity, temperature variations, dust, and sometimes more "intensive" or less careful use. An interior handle can then become marked more quickly, develop play, or lose comfort of use over time.
Finish: a crucial point for exterior use
On an external door, the finish is severely tested. Some decorative finishes suitable for interior use can wear more quickly on an entrance door: micro-scratches, areas that become polished, loss of uniformity, sensitivity to friction. For intensive use, a very resistant finish (for example a surface treatment such as PVD) is recommended, generally more durable against wear and scratches.
Fixing and security: issue no.1 on a real entrance door
On a door opening to the outside, the fixing must be designed for rigidity and security. Generally, through-fixing (through screws) and a truly secure mounting are preferred, to avoid play on a heavy door and to limit the risk of dismantling from the outside.
Screws accessible from the exterior side: to be avoided
On an entrance door, ideally no screws should be accessible from the exterior side. External screws must be invisible or concealed, to prevent someone from being able to unscrew the handle from the outside. However, many handles intended for interior use employ simpler mounting systems (depending on the case: adapters, non-through screws, less "anti-unscrewing" systems). This can work, but it is not what we recommend for an exposed entrance door.
Doors with lift-up lock: beware of the return spring
Many external doors (and sometimes doors between the house and a garage/cellar) use a lift-up lock: the handle is lifted to lock. The problem is that many handles intended for interior use have a return spring, designed to return the lever to horizontal. This spring can prevent or hinder the lift-up, making locking difficult or even impossible.
If the customer wants a lift-up compatible handle
If a handle needs to be lift-up compatible, this must be specified when ordering in the "Comment" field. This allows appropriate preparation when possible (for example by removing certain internal parts such as the spring, depending on the handle's design).
If the handle is already ordered

In which cases an interior handle may be suitable
An interior handle is perfectly suited to an interior door. It can also be suitable in certain cases on an "intermediate" door (for example house/garage, house/cellar), provided that the configuration is compatible: door weight, frequency of use, type of lock (lift-up or not), and expectations regarding durability/finish.
When it is better to choose a handle designed for exterior use
For a real external entrance door (main door, frequent use, exposure, security requirement), it is preferable to opt for a handle designed for this use: more resistant finish, secure through-fixing, invisible/concealed screws on the exterior side, and lift-up compatibility if the lock requires it. The objective is to avoid premature wear, play, operating problems (particularly with lift-up) and above all an insufficient level of fixing/security for an exposed door.
