How to Clean a Zamak Handle

Among the most popular materials in handle manufacturing at the moment, we find Zamak. It is an economical and ecological alloy, used to design designer handles at a price that challenges the entire market. Although it has many qualities, it is not perfect. This material is subject to oxidation (white rust). So remember to clean it from time to time.

Zamak, brief definition

Zamak is the name of an alloy composed of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and sometimes copper. It is the acronym of the German names of the metals that compose it: zinc (zinc), aluminium, magnesium (magnesium) and kupfer (copper).

The average ratio for making this alloy is 95% zinc, 4% aluminium, 1% copper and approximately 0.03% magnesium. Its melting point is around 400°C. This alloy has the particularity of being solid and easy to work with. It is very suitable for die-casting, as it has very good fluidity. It finds its marks particularly in interior ironwork.

However, this material is subject to oxidation (white rust). Although it usually uses an anti-corrosion finish (chromate, nickel plating, etc.), this is not necessarily sufficient. That is why it must be well maintained so that it keeps its original shine.

Treatment of a zamak handle

Zamak handles do not necessarily require special maintenance. But depending on the case, in-depth treatments may be necessary.

Surface cleaning of a zamak handle

Cleaning Zamak handles is generally very simple. Simply use soapy water, rinse everything and finish by wiping, ideally with a chamois leather. Otherwise, a cloth soaked in methylated spirits or water mixed with concentrated sulphuric acid or 6% distilled water.

Restoration of a zamak handle

Zamak is a material that can present a grey appearance over time. However, it can be restored by giving it a patinated appearance. To do this, you need to:

• Mix 10 grams of copper sulphate and 10 grams of potassium chlorate in hot water,
• Leave everything to cool
• Coat the Zamak with this preparation and leave to dry
• Finish the maintenance with a cloth or polisher to make it shine.

Maintenance advice: For zamak products covered with a protective varnish, it is strongly advised not to use detergent products.
