Guide for simple and quick fitting of your window handles 

It is very useful to know how to change a window handle particularly if you are renovating or changing the décor of your flat or house. You will discover that there are different types of window handles which are all fairly simple to install. Follow the steps to find out how to install a window handle!

In which cases should you change a window handle? 

Window handles can deteriorate over time and with daily use: they can become more difficult to operate, deteriorate or even break.

It may also be that the handles of your windows do not match your interior décor and you would like to have handles that are more in harmony with the desired style.

Changing your window handles means wanting to enjoy the aesthetics of new designer handles whilst reinforcing the security of our home!

Let us not forget that the window handle remains functional equipment which prevents intrusion risks: it is sometimes recommended to secure a window handle to prevent any break-in.

How to choose your window handles properly?

A window handle is a device for closing and opening a window. It allows you to manipulate the window without having to touch the window frame directly. Window handles are generally installed on casement windows, but they can also be installed on sliding windows. 

You should choose your new window handles according to: 

•  the type and material of the windows
•  the type of window handles
•  decorative preferences

The type of window

When you choose a window handle, it is important to consider the type of window you wish to fit. Casement window handles and patio door handles are generally larger than sliding window handles as they need to be fixed to the window frame when you open and close the window. Sliding window handles can be smaller and be fitted directly into the sliding panel. 

Window handles are suitable for wooden, PVC or aluminium windows. The diversity of finishes, colours and shapes allows all interior decoration styles to be satisfied.

Before changing your window handle, make sure to choose the model that will replace it carefully. Take care to choose a format compatible with your window type and ensure you choose a good quality handle that meets standards to ensure your safety.

The different types of window handle

Window handles are generally made of metal, plastic or wood. They can be fixed to the window frame by a screw or by a clip-on fastening. Window handles are available in a variety of styles and finishes, allowing them to match your home's interior décor.

There are several different kinds of window handle, including the lever handle, the espagnolette and the window knob, the latter being present mainly on wooden windows.

Handles exist in all shapes: straight, curved, rounded, slim, wide, sculpted or smooth. Designers create models in all colours: matt black, gold, white, chrome or bronze. Like door handles to which some window handles can be matched, all styles can be found: classic, rustic, contemporary or futuristic. How to prepare for fitting the window handle?

There are several criteria to consider when you choose a window handle. 

The type of fitting 

Firstly, you must determine the type of fitting you need. There are generally two types of fitting: surface fitting or recessed fitting. Surface fitting is the most common and requires pre-drilled holes in the window frame. Recessed fitting, meanwhile, requires larger holes and is generally used for larger windows and sliding patio doors.

The type of window handle

Next, you must determine the style of handle you need. There are three main types: 

• Lever handle (identical to a door handle): the latch lowers or raises to operate the window opening or its tilt-and-turn position.
• Knob handle or espagnolette: generally installed on a wooden window, the handle is turned to operate the opening
• Pull handle often used for patio doors. This model is equipped with a locking system which allows you to lock the window from the inside for home security.

Positioning the handle on the window

Check carefully that the chosen handle can be fitted on your joinery. Some handles must be placed on the right or left of the window. If a handle is left-handed, it must be placed on the left casement of the window. 

There are PRM handles (adapted for People with Reduced Mobility) which are designed to facilitate the opening and closing of windows.

The handle size

Once you have determined the type of fitting and the style of handle you need, it is time to choose the right size. The handle size must correspond to the diameter of the pre-drilled hole in the window frame. You should not have to force the handle into the hole, it must go in easily. 

Choosing the right handle material

Decorative ironmongery has varied ranges of interior handles manufactured in numerous materials: brass, bronze, wrought iron, wood, zamak, plastic or porcelain. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, plastic is generally cheaper than other materials, but it can be easily damaged by sunlight. Stainless steel is generally more expensive than plastic, but it is more durable and can withstand the weather. Wood is generally considered to be the most elegant natural material but it is not as durable as metal or zamak (zinc and aluminium alloy).

The equipment needed to install a window handle 

To install a window handle, you will need to gather the following tools: 

• a screwdriver

• a hammer

• pliers

You will need to get out the drill if you are radically changing the handle model.

The handle fitting steps on the window

You will notice that changing your window handles does not require advanced DIY knowledge.

These fitting steps can be done directly on the window without having to remove the casement from its hinges.

1st step: Remove the old handle from the window

The first step is to remove the old handle from the window. To do this, place the handle horizontally to access the fixing screws. If the screws are not visible, use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws. If the screws are concealed under a cap, simply lift it slightly using a flat-head screwdriver and rotate it by hand or with pliers to access the screws. Once the screws are removed, you should be able to remove the handle easily. Use a releasing product if the central square spindle resists slightly or pliers to grip the square more easily.

2nd step: Install the new handle on the casement

Before fitting the new handle, lightly clean the old escutcheon location to remove any traces from your wooden or PVC window.

To prevent any play, we advise you to use the square spindle from the old handle which is sized to fit the window hole. Insert and align the handle opposite the pre-drilled holes in the window (the screw holes) then tighten the screws. Replace the screw cover if applicable. Finally check that the whole assembly works properly.
