Interior or exterior handles: beware of usage mistakes

Door handles are essential elements of interior decoration, but they must also meet precise technical requirements. If you are considering using a handle designed for interior use on a front door, landing door, or in a high-traffic location such as an office or hotel, it is important to understand the limitations of each product. Some handles are intended solely for residential use, on lightweight doors and in low-demand environments. Conversely, exterior or professional doors require robust handles, securely fixed and fitted with wear-resistant finishes.

At Milla Poignées, we regularly receive questions on this subject, and it is therefore important to clarify the points to check before fitting a handle on a front door or in a public space. The aim of this article is to guide you in avoiding costly mistakes, unnecessary returns or premature wear. All our handles are described in precise detail, but here is a general guide to understanding what truly differentiates an interior handle from a model designed for exterior or heavy-duty use.

Why an interior handle is not suitable for a front door

• Unsuitable fixing: interior handles are designed to be screwed in simply, without a through-fixing. This can lead to rapid loosening on a heavy or frequently used door.
• No Grade 3 or 4 certification: these standards guarantee robustness for high-traffic environments (offices, hotels). Interior handles generally do not meet these standards.
• Delicate finishes: classic finishes such as matt black, chrome or polished brass are attractive but can scratch easily. For heavy use, a PVD finish is preferable, offering greater resistance thanks to a titanium coating.
• Incompatibility with lift-to-lock mechanisms: some front doors require the handle to be lifted in order to lock. The majority of our interior handles are not compatible with this mechanism without adaptation. Upon request, we can remove the return spring from any of our handles so that the handle is compatible with a lift-to-lock door. However, this adaptation is not recommended, for the reasons mentioned in this article.

Examples of unsuitable models

The Salta, Arta, Kalmia, Petunia and Marigold handles are designed for interior use only. They are not suitable for landing doors, front doors or public spaces, even if they may appear technically installable.

Professional solutions available

For front doors or heavy-use environments, we offer specifically adapted handles, featuring:

• Reinforced through-fixing
• Resistance certifications (Grade 3 or 4)
• High-resistance PVD finish
• Possible compatibility with lift-to-lock mechanisms (on request)

If you are unsure, our team can adapt certain models to your lock, for example by removing the return spring at the factory.

What about offices?

Offices also require robust handles, as usage is often more demanding than in a private home. Repeated cleaning, employees in a hurry, impacts from trolleys or objects... The handle must be designed with this in mind. We recommend handles certified to Grade 3 minimum, with a PVD coating.
