Lacquered handles, ultra design and highly sought-after in modern interiors, on kitchen furniture, cupboards or designer entrance doors, offer an elegant, glossy finish, often with a mirror effect. But their delicate finish requires particular care. Wrong products, harsh detergents, abrasives, or unsuitable gestures can cause stains, scratches, or dull their shine.

Products to avoid to keep lacquered handles gleaming 

Here are the mistakes to avoid in order to preserve the lustre of a glossy door handle, lacquered furniture or any lacquered surface:

❌ Abrasive products

Products containing abrasive granules, abrasive sponges, or even sandpaper (or fine-grain abrasive paper) should be avoided. They scratch the gloss lacquer, damage the mouldings, the stainless steel handles, the paint layers, and can damage the finishing varnish. Unintentional sanding can also bring out the wood grain or veneer, especially on furniture made from laminate or solid wood.

❌ Solvents and powerful stripping agents

Avoid acetone, turpentine, paint thinner, or stripping products for doors or furniture: they attack the lacquered paint, lift the layers, alter the colour and leave sticky residues.

These products are sometimes used to strip a wooden piece of furniture, but they are not compatible with a lacquered handle or high-gloss lacquered furniture.

❌ Unsuitable household cleaners

Common household cleaners, particularly those containing rubbing alcohol, bleach, white vinegar or washing soda, are too harsh. Used repeatedly, they alter the white colour, dull lacquered white as well as black, cause a loss of shine and accelerate wear of the coating.

These effects are visible on lacquered furniture, but also on painted handles, zamak handles with a gloss or matt finish.

❌ Greasy aerosols or oily products

Beeswax, oils or aerosol greases should never be applied directly to a lacquered handle. While these products are sometimes used to wax varnished wood, sand a raw surface or shine a worktop, they leave irreversible greasy marks on lacquered surfaces. Even linseed oil or products for natural wood are unsuitable here.

Recommended products for maintaining a lacquered handle 

To preserve the shine of your handles, follow these simple tips: 

 * A soft cloth, or better still a chamois leather

  * A little soapy water (mild soap)

  * Immediate drying with a clean, dry cloth

  * Cleaning with circular movements to avoid streaks
