Demenico Sphere Urbi et Orbi, terrazzo furniture knob

A concrete sphere that looks as though it was picked up on a beach in Mani. Demenico takes its name from the rocky beach near Limeni where the founder of Urbi et Orbi was born: rocks rounded by the sea over centuries, black beneath white foam. The Urbi et Orbi studio drew on them to create this knob in 2018, in both spherical and cone-shaped versions.

Three sphere sizes

• S — Ø 3.5 cm, M4 thread: small drawers, boxes, bathroom furniture
• M — Ø 4.5 cm, M4 thread: cupboard doors, chests of drawers, sideboards
• L — Ø 6.5 cm, M8 thread: interior door or wall hook

The three sizes work well together on the same piece of furniture: the small one on drawers, the medium one on doors.

Terrazzo: concrete with exposed aggregates

The sphere is cast in terrazzo: concrete coloured throughout, with white or black aggregates embedded in it and revealed at the surface. The distribution of grains varies from piece to piece: no two spheres are alike. Small air holes on the surface are a characteristic of concrete, not a defect.

Care

Use a soft cloth, lukewarm water and a neutral detergent. Avoid acids, alkaline products, solvents and chlorine. Concrete is hard, but it can break on impact, like ceramic.
