Urbi et Orbi was founded in Athens in 2012 and spent a decade specialising in concrete design. Designers and craftspeople work together there, and each piece is unique. The house takes concrete beyond large-scale construction and turns it into interior objects: alongside furniture knobs and coat hooks, its collection includes washbasins, light fittings, cement tiles, furniture and decorative objects.
A natural concrete, in GFRC and UHPC mixes
The material combines basic natural elements — rock, sand and water —, with cement accounting for only around one tenth of the mass. The workshop selects high-quality, environmentally responsible raw materials and uses special GFRC and UHPC mixes. These formulations aim for objects that are safe, functional and distinctive, far removed from the usual industrial use of concrete.
Shapes inspired by the Mediterranean coastline
Demenico Rocks is inspired by the rocks eroded by the sea on the coast of the Mani, near Limeni: sphere and cone translate the transition from raw rock to a smooth form. Pomolo, designed by Dimitris Venetsanos, ranges from Ø 4.4 cm to Ø 17 cm; Marine takes up its breakwater motif in a smaller volume. Depending on the size, these pieces are fixed with M4 or M8 screws, as a furniture knob, door knob or wall coat hook.
An unapologetic material and a waste-free workshop
Variations in shade and air bubbles are inherent to concrete, not defects. Raw materials are sourced locally, and the workshop's reclaimed sand is preferred over sand extracted from nature. Since the Zero Waste Project launched in 2020, all internal production waste is reused: pieces made from it contain between 20 and 80% recycled materials.
