Pomolo was born in an Athens office in 2013: the Urbi and Orbi team needed knobs for their own cupboards and decided to cast them themselves in concrete. Designed by Dimitris Venetsanos, the piece gave rise to a range of four sizes and Europe's first manufacturer of concrete handles.
One piece, two uses: screwed onto furniture, it serves as a knob; screwed to a wall, it becomes a coat hook. It is the same piece; only the screw changes.
Engineered concrete, not construction-site concrete
The material is UHPC — ultra-high-performance concrete: a reinforced blend of cement, admixtures, glass fibre and special aggregates. Untreated concrete is porous and prone to staining; this concrete is treated with a deep-penetrating, breathable sealant that protects it from water and dirt without giving it the plastic-like appearance of varnish.
The colour runs through the material, rather than sitting on the surface. As a result, each piece has its own subtle colour variations, both across its surface and compared with other pieces. The small air holes visible on the surface are a natural characteristic of concrete, not a manufacturing defect.
Four sizes, two mounting options
- S — Ø 4.5 cm, 65 g, M4 thread: for furniture or as a small wall hook
- M — Ø 7.2 cm, 170 g, M4 thread: for furniture or as a coat hook
- L — Ø 8.5 cm, 250 g, M4 thread for furniture, M8 for a door
- XL — Ø 17 cm, 1.5 kg, M8 thread: for use as a front door knob or a generously sized coat hook
Drawers, kitchen cabinet fronts, chests of drawers, bathroom furniture, wall-mounted storage: Pomolo works with them all. Combining different sizes and colours on a single wall creates a striking installation.
Living with concrete
Concrete is hard, but it can break like marble or ceramic: avoid striking the surface with a heavy object.
To clean it, use lukewarm water and a mild, neutral detergent with a soft cloth. Wipe up coloured liquids before they dry. Do not use acids, alkalis, solvents or chlorine-based products — if any come into contact with the surface, rinse immediately with water. An occasional application of wax helps maintain the surface and its patina.
