A Danish ceramicist in Copenhagen
Anne Black is a Danish ceramicist and designer, who graduated from Designskolen Kolding in 1997, and whose studio and shop are located in Copenhagen, in the Vesterbro district. After working in several collective studios in the Danish capital, she dedicated her career to applied arts and craftsmanship. Her work is rooted in Scandinavian design and artisan craft: serene forms, soft glaze colours, and a constant attention to touch.
A studio, a shop and collaborations
In 2013, the ceramicist opened her concept store in Copenhagen, the Black Store, bringing together international high-end brands in fashion, furniture and design accessories alongside her own hand-made porcelain lines. In recent years, she has extended her work to one-of-a-kind pieces made in her studio, often with guest designers such as Akira Minagawa, Henrik Vibskov and Adish.
Four designs, five sizes
The range of knobs and coat hooks comes in four designs: mat, plain, dot and flower. Sizes XS, S and M can be used both as furniture knobs and as wall coat hooks; L and XL are reserved for coat hooks. Not all sizes cover all designs: mat is available in all five, plain from S to XL, dot and flower in S and M.
Porcelain, harder than standard ceramics
Each piece is slip-cast in porcelain, hand-shaped and then fired at high temperature. More than thirty colours are available, in three finish families: glazed, soft matt, or glazed white with hand-applied decoration. Porcelain does not absorb moisture, is scratch-resistant and retains its colour over time.
A workshop in Vietnam since 2005
In 2005, Anne Black put her skills and studio to work on a development project, establishing a ceramics workshop in northern Vietnam in close collaboration with highly skilled artisans. Supported by Danida, the Danish aid organisation, this workshop has become a socially and ecologically sustainable enterprise employing more than fifty artisans: each piece is hand-shaped there, with meticulous craftsmanship inherited from Vietnamese artisan traditions.
