The materials of windows and window handles

Before addressing the materials used for window handles, let us start with those used for your windows!

 . Window materials 

Your windows are made from three materials: aluminium, PVC and wood.

Aluminium windows

Aluminium, a white and lightweight metal, meets the needs of modern architecture, making it possible in particular to envisage large glazed surfaces. Aluminium windows also offer a wide choice of colours (silver, matt black, white or more vibrant colours). A sustainable material, aluminium is a recyclable metal, resistant and requiring no maintenance. Glass and silver steel-coloured aluminium create a contemporary atmosphere.

PVC windows

PVC, cheaper than wood or aluminium, is the most widely used material for our windows. PVC provides good insulation, does not rust but is not suitable for large glazed surfaces. In terms of colour, white dominates. 

Wooden windows

An ecological and aesthetic solution, wood allows insulating windows to be made for all types of home. However, wooden windows require regular maintenance, in particular treatment against external damage (water, insects).

Mixed windows  

It is possible to consider mixed windows combining wood and aluminium. This solution allows you to combine the natural feel of wood with the resistance of stainless steel!

What are the different types of window opening?

There are several types of opening for your windows. 

• The casement window: this is the most classic model. This type of casement window consists of one or two sashes that pivot on a vertical axis. It opens in the French style (opening laterally inwards) or in the English style (opening outwards).

• The hopper window: a horizontal inward opening from the top of the window

• The Italian-style opening window (the lower part of the window opens outwards while the top remains fixed)

• The tilt-and-turn window: the window combines side opening and top-vent opening (window ajar at the top)

• The sliding window: like sliding doors, there is the sliding window where the sashes open by sliding over one another, or the pocket window where the sashes slide into the wall cavity.

• The sash window (an Anglo-Saxon model that opens vertically).

The selected window handles are not compatible with sliding windows and sliding French doors, nor with sash windows. However, they are perfectly suited to all other window models.

There are many handles for sliding doors: recessed handles are available in a wide range of design shapes and finishes.

 . Window handle materials

While the materials for windows are limited to aluminium, PVC and wood, window handles as well as interior door handles are offered in a much wider range of materials.

The shapes and finishes of window handles and door handles have become considerably more diverse. This is partly due to the many materials used to craft quality design products.

Brass is the quality material par excellence. An alloy of copper and zinc, brass is prized by Italian designers and creators.

Zamak (an alloy of zinc, aluminium and copper) is also highly popular as it is an easy-to-machine and eco-friendly alloy (infinitely recyclable). Zamak offers a wide choice of colours and finishes.

Aluminium is also frequently chosen as it produces lightweight and resistant interior door handles. 

Stainless steel is also among the raw materials used to make window handles, door handles and knob handles. Stainless steel is highly advantageous thanks to its price and durability. The kitchen is the room most often chosen for this stainless steel finish, as it echoes the shiny stainless steel of the sink and pipework.

Wrought iron is often reserved for exterior handles such as an entrance door or garage door, or for gates. The main drawback of iron is its maintenance requirements.

Let us also add:

 – nylon (or PVC) chosen for kitchen handles (including furniture) or commercial door handles; 

- wood, a natural and noble material;

- glass, for a handle or door knob;

- nickel and bronze… and even concrete!
